Let's discuss the philosophy of humor.

Why are most things that are funny are funny because they are true? What exactly is the quality to be found in language or a situation to make it humorous? What does our ability to interpret the world as comedic say about the human condition?

what do you guys think about value theory?
do you think that our values can be reduced solely to feelings?
do our values only arise because of our choices?

Explain your political philosophy. What party (if any) do you affiliate with?
Who did you support (from the beginning and at the end) in the last election?

If you live outside the US, who did you support in your latest general election? Perhaps explain something about your country's political process.

Discuss your thoughts on determinism in regards to the people in your life with whom you have felt a true connection with. Do you believe you have crossed paths with these people for a reason and is there a lesson to be learned from the relationship?

Furthermore, if these patterns are a culmination of seemingly inconsequential events that were predestined to bring us to our current relationships, then how much free will do you believe we have in choosing those who we become close to?

fun little logic puzzle [Dec. 9th, 2008|05:42 pm]

1. There are five houses.
2. The Englishman lives in the red house.
3. The Spaniard owns the dog.
4. Coffee is drunk in the green house.
5. The Ukrainian drinks tea.
6. The green house is immediately to the right of the ivory house.
7. The Old Gold smoker owns snails.
8. Kools are smoked in the yellow house.
9. Milk is drunk in the middle house.
10. The Norwegian lives in the first house.
11. The man who smokes Chesterfields lives in the house next to the man with the fox.
12. Kools are smoked in the house next to the house where the horse is kept.
13. The Lucky Strike smoker drinks orange juice.
14. The Japanese smokes Parliaments.
15. The Norwegian lives next to the blue house.

Now, who drinks water? Who owns the zebra?

In the interest of clarity, it must be added that each of the five houses is painted a different color, and their inhabitants are of different national extractions, own different pets, drink different beverages and smoke different brands of American cigarettes. In statement 6, right refers to the reader's right.

this is completely not cool. but that's cool, cos i'm cool as fuck.

is there a philosophical approach to what it means to be cool? i dig how the term cool is one of those ambiguous cultural adjectives, just like weird or crazy. what is the quality of cool? it's so prevalent in our culture to call things cool, and we all know what it is, but i'm curious to see if anyone has thoughts.

what do you think? is there a philosophical approach to what it means for something or someone to be cool?

stay cool

Tell about influential factors that changed the way you think. Books, authors, events, or even a situation.

Me: As lol as this is, the existentialism unit in senior year english of high school. I read No Exit and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, and it's been a rollercoaster since. I feel as though asking why and looking for reason can bring me nothing but helplessness, and I need to find another 'school of thought' to look into. idk. Feel free to rant or tldr; if needed!

I was studying with one of my good colleagues recently and saw him reading this book:

Here are the first 20 or so pages on Google Books

"The first edition of Frans de Waal's Chimpanzee Politics was acclaimed not only by primatologists for its scientific achievement but also by politicians, business leaders, and social psychologists for its remarkable insights into the most basic human needs and behaviors. Twenty-five years later, this book is considered a classic. Featuring a new preface that includes recent insights from the author, this anniversary edition is a detailed and thoroughly engrossing account of rivalries and coalitions—actions governed by intelligence rather than instinct. As we watch the chimpanzees of Arnhem behave in ways we recognize from Machiavelli (and from the nightly news), de Waal reminds us again that the roots of politics are older than humanity."

What do you feel on the topic of inherent drives in the context of political motivations and dynamics? How much autonomy do we have on the subject of familial, communal, social, political, and global dynamics?
